To overcome the price hike, the government is introducing widespread employment opportunity for the poor people. For this, Food and Disaster Management Ministry will maintain projects of 100 crore throughout April. In parallel. Local Government Department have sanctioned 20 crore for the 168 upazillas identified as the extreme areas of poverty. The programs will stat within one or two days.
Food Ministry informed that under this program unemployed labourer will get TK 150 against work. Upazilla Food and Disaster management Committee will under the leadership of UNO will execute the program at the village level. Those people who are already getting the Government other privileges such as VGF, VGD will not the get the benefit of this program.
It is heard that the money will be distributed in building non-brick roads, ponds, in excavating drains and rivers, in forestation to the labours.
Government has launched the program to supply money to the poor people in exchange of work. To support the workless poor families of the villages is the target of this program.
Dr. Mustafizur Rahman of Centre for Policy Dialogue(CPD) has appreciated the program as a positive one. He said that 25% people of the country are ultrapoor. 7.5 m people falls under this category. Out of this 5 m are under different social program like VGF. The new programs will benefit the remaining 2.5 m people.
Govt. hopes that the market condition will improve with the cutting of ‘boro’ crops after which this program may not required to be continued.
Local Government has labeled 168 upazillas as the most needy areas and decided to rapidly provide employment to these areas. Already Tk 20 crore special sanctions has been made for these areas. Every upazilla will get equal amount of Tk 10 lac. Local Government Ministry will look after the program and the money will be utilized to develop and repair the roads and educational institutions. This program will be implemented in the form of ‘Money for Work’(Kabita).The programis aimed at improving the infrastructure of the localities. The Ministry is also thinking of sanctioning more 140 crore taka for the program. ( Prothom Alo 3 April 2008)
