democracy in universities-1People frustrated at decay of democracy at the national level but what about the exercise of democracy at the universities in Bangladesh.

There is ample scope of democracy in Universities according to the university acts. According to the 1973 university act, the VCs of the universities are supposed to be elected through election by the senate. But at present none of the VCs in the public universities are elected except the VC of Jahangir Nagar University, the election process of which is not beyond controversy.

The practice of election for Student Bodies is also absent for long. The successive administrations fail to hold elections for these student bodies creating a vacuum in student leadership and in the future of the country. The vacuum created is filling up by the muscle men and gun trotters who will become the leaders of the future.

The prospect is frustrating for people.
