Jamaat verdict-1A 3 member High Court bench in a verdict has cancelled the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami with the Election Commission.

Jamaat was Registered in Nov 24, 2008 under Representation of People Order 2008 ordinance.

A writ petition was filed by General Secretary, Tariq Federation and 24 others in January 25, 2009 against the registration of Jamaat on the ground that it is against the sovereignty of Bangladesh and against the constitution. The case was revived after 4 years and the hearing is completed in June 12 2013.

Jamaat has appealed against the verdict immediately after the announcement in the Supreme Court. Their lawyer pleaded that Jamaat is a registered political party with the Election Commission and Election Commission has not yet taken any decision on JI and Court can’t come to a conclusion without any decision from the EC.

JI has called a 48 hour hartal against the verdict on 12 and 13 August after Eid-ul Fitr. It is not understandable why Jamaat prefers street violence to counter a legal issue.

It is uncertain what would be impact of the verdict on the present political and economic situation of the country and in what direction the play of politics will progress.
